INSTINCT AND TRAGEDY: Nancy’s loyal dog breaks free, runs 5 kilometers toward the Rillito River — officers are left stunned when they find it frantically digging at a freshly covered patch of earth

Authorities in Arizona confirmed that search teams were redirected late yesterday after Nancy Guthrie’s family dog unexpectedly broke free from temporary containment and ran several kilometers toward the Rillito River corridor.

According to law enforcement sources, the animal had been kept under supervision at a relative’s residence while investigators continued processing evidence connected to Nancy’s disappearance.

Witnesses reported that the dog appeared unusually agitated before slipping its collar and sprinting away. Family members attempted to follow but quickly lost sight of it as it moved with apparent urgency through residential streets and open terrain.

Officers were notified and tracked the direction of travel using patrol vehicles and drone support.

Approximately five kilometers from Nancy’s home, near a stretch of brush and sandy embankment close to the Rillito River, deputies located the dog. What drew immediate attention, officials said, was the animal’s behavior.

Rather than wandering aimlessly, it was fixated on a specific patch of recently disturbed soil. Officers observed the dog clawing intensely at what appeared to be a shallow area of freshly turned earth.

Authorities secured the site and requested forensic assistance. Crime scene technicians began documenting the area, photographing the soil pattern and surrounding vegetation before conducting controlled excavation.

Officials have not publicly confirmed what, if anything, was recovered beneath the disturbed ground. Law enforcement emphasized that freshly moved soil in desert environments can result from various causes, including wildlife activity or environmental factors.

However, investigators acknowledged that trained canines — even household pets — can respond to scent traces linked to familiar individuals. Detectives are now evaluating whether environmental scent drift, riverbed airflow, or residual trace elements could have drawn the dog to that precise location.

Search teams expanded the perimeter around the excavation site, scanning for tire impressions, footprints, or discarded materials. Drone imaging was used to assess terrain variations and identify additional anomalies in the surrounding area.

Officials cautioned against speculation regarding the dog’s behavior, noting that while the development is considered significant, forensic confirmation is required before drawing conclusions. Laboratory analysis of soil samples and any materials recovered is currently underway.

The investigation remains active as authorities continue processing both physical evidence and geographic data associated with the river corridor area.
