They didn’t choose a concrete pipe because it was hidden or convenient. They chose it because there was nowhere else left to go. Rising rents, medical bills, lost jobs, and vanished support systems pushed them past every safety net, until a piece of infrastructure became the last thin line between them and the open street. Inside that narrow cylinder, they built what they could: a mattress, folded clothes, a few treasured items, and a dog who still wags his tail when they wake.

Their care for the space, and for each other, is its own quiet defiance. It insists that dignity does not disappear just because an address does. Yet no amount of resilience can substitute for housing, healthcare, and community support. Walking past scenes like this is easy; changing what they represent is harder. But until we accept responsibility, more lives will disappear into the hollow spaces of our cities.
