as if raising their voices might disturb the silence left behind. Inside, investigators followed a trail of blood up the stairs, piecing together the children’s final moments:

some shot as they slept, others killed as they tried to scramble out a second-story window onto the garage roof, desperate to escape the man they trusted most.

In the days before the murders, Shamar Elkins had pleaded online for protection from “dark thoughts,”

asking God to guard his mind and emotions. Now, those posts read like a final warning no one knew how to answer.

Officers later cornered him after a carjacking and high-speed chase that ended in gunfire and his death.

What remains is a city in mourning, two wounded women, and eight small graves that will never explain why.
