LIVE: Snowballs Thrown at NYPD Officers in Washington Square Park

A tense scene is unfolding this afternoon at Washington Square Park, where individuals were seen throwing snowballs at officers from the New York City Police Department.

Video from the park shows officers standing in formation as snowballs are hurled in their direction. Shouting can be heard from the crowd while bystanders record the confrontation on their phones.

It is not immediately clear what prompted the gathering or whether the incident is connected to a larger demonstration. Officers appear to be maintaining their positions and monitoring the crowd.

While some may view snowballs as minor, law enforcement officials often warn that objects thrown at officers — even snow — can escalate situations quickly and create safety risks, especially if ice or other hard objects are mixed in.

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether any arrests have been made. Police presence in the area appears heightened as officers work to prevent the situation from escalating further.

Public safety officials regularly emphasize that peaceful protest is protected, but interference with officers or throwing objects at them can lead to charges.

The situation remains fluid as of this writing.
