Senate Blocks Sanders’ Attempt to Halt Arms Deal

Sanders’ resolutions were never expected to win, but the scale of their defeat exposed how deeply entrenched bipartisan support for Israel remains, even amid unprecedented global outrage. Only a small bloc of progressives backed his effort to force Congress to confront whether U.S. bombs and shells are enabling potential violations of American and international law in Gaza. Their arguments leaned on statutes meant to prevent U.S. complicity in human rights abuses, yet those warnings were largely brushed aside.

What survived the vote was not the legislation, but the rupture it revealed. The debate sharpened a generational and ideological divide: a rising movement demanding conditions, accountability, and an end to blank-check support, facing an establishment still anchored in old alliances and security doctrines. The arms will almost certainly flow. The question of what that makes America will not so easily be contained.
